Clinical Trials
At the Advanced Pulmonary Center, physicians from Pulmonary Associates are leading clinical tests of two procedures that seem to promise relief from emphysema.
- Aeris Therapeutics Biologic Lung Volume Reduction System: This study evaluates whether medication that shrinks diseased lung tissue is an effective treatment for emphysema.
- Exhale Airway Stents for Emphysema: This study tests a minimally invasive, one- to two-hour procedure that creates six new airways kept open by stents, through which air trapped in diseased lung tissue can exit. The procedure shrinks hyperinflated lung tissue, allowing more space for healthy lung tissue to function.

Minimally Invasive Diagnostic Procedures
In another first for our community, the Advanced Pulmonary Center recently introduced a groundbreaking diagnostic technique called ultrasonic bronchoscopy. This powerful new test lets physicians "see" through lung tissue, to check for lung cancer and other conditions.
In the Valley, this endobronchial ultrasound procedure is currently offered only at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital by pulmonologists who have completed specific training.
The endobronchial ultrasound is done at the time of standard bronchoscopy, using conscious sedation. Biopsies guided by real-time ultrasound images allow tissue sampling of lymph nodes and masses.
Benefits of this this technique include:
- Improved effectiveness and safety of biopsying central chest lesions.
- Very rapid initial diagnosis and initial staging for patients with lung cancer.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension diagnosis is another state-of-the-art diagnostic procedure available at the Avanced Pulmonary Center. Through this test, doctors can determine the appropriate medications for treatment of high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. This condition cannot be tested with standard blood pressure measurements.
